How to get started with Homeschooling in Florida

  • Decide if you are going to register to Homeschool through your county or if you are going to be enrolling your children in free online public school, enrolling in a virtual school, or registering with/enrolling through an Umbrella school.
  • If you decide to use an Umbrella school, contact that Umbrella school to get started.
  • If you decide to go through your county, you must send a letter of intent to Homeschool to your county.
  • If you decide to enroll your children in Free online public school or virtual school, go to their website and start the enrolling process.
  • Law states that you child has to be registered through the county or an Umbrella school by age 6. (you do not have to register by age 5)
  • You generally have 30 days to get your child registered for Homeschooling after you withdrawal your child from a public or private school. This rule can vary from county to county though. So call your county and find out if they expect you to have your child enrolled in an umbrella school, or to file your letter of intent to Homeschool to your county within a week, two weeks, or if you get 30 days to do so.
